Updates to Local Initiatives Program

$60,000 in event marketing awards available this fiscal year

We are excited to announce that from July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023, Discover Siskiyou will fund 20 event marketing awards in the amount of $3,000 to local entities hosting events in Siskiyou this fiscal year. These awards may be used to book talent (musicians, guest speakers, workshop leaders, etc.) as well as marketing and advertising expenses including but not limited to posters and mailers, social media ads and influencers, display ads, and media buys. Awards may not be used for “hard” costs such as facility rentals, labor, insurance, or general operating expenses.

Applications and an informational sheet are posted online at https://www.industry.discoversiskiyou.com/event-marketing-program. There will be two application windows per year: July 1 – Dec. 31, and Jan. 1 – June 30, with up to 10 awards granted per window. Applications will be reviewed and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, provided the application is complete and meets all criteria in the provided informational document. Applications must be submitted via the online form.

NEW: Siskiyou Smoke Report Facebook Group

As you all know, wildfires often impact summer tourism in Siskiyou. It's more important than ever to remind visitors that despite fire activity, there are typically areas in Siskiyou that can be enjoyed smoke-free in the summer. In order to open lines of communication during wildfire season and mitigate canceled travel plans, we have created a Facebook group called Siskiyou Smoke Report. We invite all members to post photos and updates to help the community and visitors to stay up to date on air quality and smoke conditions throughout Siskiyou.

Recreation Economy for Rural Communities Workshop

Discover Siskiyou and Siskiyou Economic Development Center staff hosted state and federal partners in Yreka last week for a two-day tour and workshop to create an action plan for community development in the city of Yreka. The project goal is to grow Yreka's downtown amenities; enhance physical connections to access outdoor recreation; inspire community pride and identify in the city's natural, recreational, cultural, and historical assets; and invest in businesses and entrepreneurs that support the outdoor recreation sector. Local stakeholders present represented lodging, retail, restaurants, city and county government, members of the public, and outdoor recreation professionals. The group determined several priorities for the city; keep an eye out for press releases with details!

Get Inspired Blog

As part of our partnership with Leave No Trace, this month's blog post is all about the 7 LNT Principles. These minimum impact practices not only improve the outdoor experience but help to preserve the wonders of Siskiyou for many generations to come. Stay tuned for the launch of the official Siskiyou Pledge, where visitors and residents can join our commitment to coexist with nature responsibly.
